Dalston Loft
loft conversion for a family home with sculptural steel stairs
© Wilton Studio
A family of 5 had outgrown their Victorian end of terrace house. All upper floors were too tight: one bathroom, the bedrooms and space for working from home for both parents. Previously the Council had refused a planing application for a loft conversion, so there was not much hope to comfortable stay in the house.
Wilton Studio's planning expertise unlocked the situation and managed to include a shower room, plenty of storage and a huge bedroom in the loft. The existing bathroom and bedrooms were refurbished and two studies/ guest rooms created.
We carefully worked out the sectional design, so that the ceiling could be dropped in the rooms below where needed, but step up under the bed and storage. This way the ceilings are high in the rooms, but low over storage and corridors.
The main feature are the sculptural steel stairs- without them access to the roof would have been impossible as everything just fits exactly into the available space. The new zinc-clad dormer brings light and views into the bedroom and staircase, with new roof lights to the other side and shower room.
Oaklex Contractors provided the skills to deliver this complex project to the client's great satisfaction with highest quality build-in furniture and finishes.
